No Indictments for New Jersey Officers Who Shot Black Man With Hands Up

A New Jersey grand jury has decided not to indict two Bridgeton, New Jersey, police officers who shot and killed Jerame Reid in December 2014. Reid's death sparked protests in the town, about an hour south of Philadelphia, as the national conversation about police shootings of black men intensified in the months after Michael Brown's death in Ferguson, Missouri.

Former Star Tennis Player James Blake 'slammed to ground' by police in a case of mistaken identity

The former US No 1 tennis player James Blake was wrestled to the ground and handcuffed in New York as he was preparing to attend the US Open on Wednesday.

Blake, who is African-American, was detained by five white plainclothes police officers as he stood outside a Manhattan hotel. They had mistaken him for a suspect in an identity theft case.

...Blake was instead thrown to the ground by the plainclothes officer, who told him to roll on to his front. The former world No4 suffered a cut and bruising in the incident. After Blake had been handcuffed for 15 minutes, one of the officer’s four colleagues realized they had got the wrong person and he was released. The officer who had thrown Blake to the ground did not apologize.

No, Protests Against Police Brutality Are Not Increasing Crime

Much has been made in recent months of a series of isolated crime increases in a handful of US cities. Breathless accounts of a new crime wave have appeared in both liberal and conservative media. Right-wing pundits and some police leaders have claimed that there is a “Ferguson effect”—a significant crime increase due to the “Black Lives Matter” protests against police violence. This is both junk science and political opportunism.

Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke shot teen Laquan McDonald as he lay on ground during 15 second barrage; cop charged with murder for firing 16 times

Officer Jason Van Dyke arrived at a Cook County courthouse clad in a wool cap, sweatshirt, fleece jacket and jeans. Van Dyke's mug shots was later released, showing the 37-year-old with a blank stare.

Van Dyke, who has been on paid desk duty since the Oct. 20, 2014 shooting, is the first Chicago cop to face that charge for an on-duty death in nearly 35 years, the Chicago Tribune reported.

For months, the city had refused to release dashcam video showing 17-year-old Laquan McDonald's final moments.  But charging documents released Tuesday expose horrific details of the police-involved shooting.

Burger King Manager Says Chicago Cops Deleted Surveillance Video of Officer Killing a Teenager

On Tuesday, Van Dyke was indicted on first-degree murder charges in connection with the sixteen shots he fired into 17-year-old Laquan McDonald while responding to an Oct. 20, 2014 report of an armed man in the Burger King parking lot.

Cop in Chicago shooting had history of complaints

Jason Van Dyke, a 14-year veteran on the Chicago police force, did not face any disciplinary action in any of the cases. Investigations into the complaints, which included allegations of excessive use of force, verbal abuse and excessive force involving a firearm, ended with a finding of "not sustained" in five cases, "unfounded" in five, "exonerated" in four, an "unknown" outcome in five, and "no action" taken in one case.

Van Dyke is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Laquan McDonald, 17, who was shot 16 times while walking in the middle of the street with a knife in his hand.

Because of most folks have carry phones that have videos, your gonna see more action against the police. This will retrain how the police act and not be backed up all the time by big blue. There needs to be everybody on the same page and work together to make less crime in America. We can do it.

BTW...I seen that take of Van Dyke and it was murder. After 16 shots, he was reloading and his partner stopped him. He said he was in fear for his life. If there was no video, he might have gotten away with it. I'm glad he's off the streets, and he'll get his in jail.

Video Shows Policeman Fired Lethal Shots Into Detainee’s Back After Being Shot By Own Partner’s Gun

Last year, an alleged “known gang member” was shot and killed by police in Los Angeles. But a video released on Friday by OC Weekly shows 23-year-old Noel Aguilar was hit in the back by two Los Angeles County Sheriff Deputies, who ignored his pleas for help as he lay dying.

The deputies claimed Aguilar, who authorities tried to blame for the incident, shot one of them in the stomach, but officials revealed that the deputy’s gun wound came from his partner’s gun.

“[O]n Thursday, officials said the deputy was actually hit by a round from his partner’s gun as they tried to arrest Aguilar near 69th Way and Long Beach Boulevard shortly before 10 a.m.,” the L.A. Times reported in June 2014.

Chicago cop fatally shoots 19-year-old student and accidentally kills 55-year-old mother of five after responding to domestic disturbance

The Chicago Police Department was under fire again Saturday after cops responding to a domestic disturbance call fatally shot a 19-year-old college student and a 55-year-old mother of five.

Officers were summoned to the West Garfield Park home about 4:20 a.m. after Quintonio LeGrier, 19, started threatening his father with a bat, neighbors and relatives said.

The fatal confrontation that ensued claimed the lives of LeGrier and Bettie Jones, who lived on the ground-floor apartment of his father’s two-story home, authorities said.

Chicago police initially released few details on the shooting, saying only that an officer opened fire after they were “confronted by a combative subject.”

... The officer, LeGrier said, was yelling, “no, no, no.”

“In my opinion, he knew he had messed up. It was senseless,” Antonio LeGrier, 47, told the Chicago Sun-Times.

Family: Charges unlikely in killing of Tamir Rice by police

Nearly 400 days after a white police officer fatally shot a black 12-year-old carrying a pellet gun in an encounter captured on surveillance video, the boy's disillusioned family believes it's unlikely anyone will be indicted.

A decision on whether to charge the officer or his partner in the death of Tamir Rice — one of the higher-profile cases of black deaths at the hands of police that have roiled cities nationwide — could come any day. The grand jury making the decision has been meeting since mid-October.

The video shows patrolman Timothy Loehmann, a rookie at the time, shooting Tamir in an instant as the cruiser driven by patrolman Frank Garmback skids to a stop on Nov. 22, 2014. Tamir died the next day during surgery, and his family has repeatedly questioned why the case has dragged on.

Black Lives Matter Protests Cause Disruptions at Airport, Mall of America

Protesters blocked roads and caused significant holiday traffic delays around the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport on Wednesday after staging a rally that briefly shut down part of the nation's largest mall.

Police said eight people were arrested at the airport in relation to the protest, where officials said access to one of two terminals was blocked, causing backups on nearby roads. Some protesters took a light-rail train to the airport from the Mall of America, where protesters started the Black Lives Matter rally to bring attention to a recent police shooting of a black man in Minneapolis. Five arrests were made at the mall; one arrest was unrelated to the protest and because of an outstanding warrant.

A Black Lives Matter activist says the Mall of America was used as "a decoy" to start a protest that quickly moved to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

Hoping to draw attention to a recent police shooting of a black man in Minneapolis, hundreds of protesters briefly gathered inside the nation's largest shopping mall before abruptly walking out.

Chicago police 'accidentally' kill grandmother; more protests set as mayor demands reform

...protesters Monday. Demonstrators will march from the family church of Laquan McDonald -- another teen killed by Chicago police -- to Chicago's City Hall, where they will demand Emanuel's resignation.

Mother: Son was shot seven times

Family members and supporters of LeGrier and Jones are blaming bad leadership and a police culture of "shoot first and ask questions later" for the deaths. Specifically, they asked why police didn't use non-lethal force, such as stun guns.

Police said an officer shot LeGrier, who was carrying a metal bat and acting in a "combative" manner, early Saturday morning while responding to a call about a domestic disturbance. Jones, a neighbor, was "accidentally struck and tragically killed," police said.

The shootings come as police in Chicago and across the nation are being scrutinized for the use of deadly force.
